WHEN WAS IT CREATED? - June 27, 1934
WHEN WAS IT DISCONTINUED? - September 9, 1965. The FHA became integrated into the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
PURPOSE - To enhance the building industry through small loans to both improve and create homes.
WHO IT HELPED - All who were unable to afford buying a house on their own.
WHO IT HURT - Many speculate that the FHA was the ultimate downfall of urban and downtown living areas, and instead jump started suburbs. It is also speculated that the FHA promoted segregation through redlining, and favoring only white Americans.
WAS IT SUCCESSFUL - The FHA was one of the most successful agencies implemented by the New Deal. It was one of the only "alphabetical agencies" to outlive the Presidency of FDR, and since 1934, the FHA and HUD have helped insure over 35 million home mortgages.
Liberal or Conservative - The FHA was a liberal agency, for it used a large amount of government participation to produce more of a state of equality for all.
